Exness MT4: Download, Setup & Complete Trading Guide

Step-by-step guide to downloading, installing, and using Exness MetaTrader 4. Covers chart setup, indicators, and Expert Advisors (EAs) for automated trading.

MetaTrader 4 (MT4) remains the world's most widely used retail trading platform — and Exness has optimised it with tighter spreads, faster execution, and direct access to Exness-specific account types. Whether you are brand new to forex or migrating from another broker, this guide walks you through every step: downloading the software, configuring your charts, and deploying Expert Advisors (EAs) for automated trading.

Why Trade Exness on MT4?

MT4 was released in 2005 and has since become the global standard for forex retail trading. Its staying power comes from three pillars: a familiar interface that millions of traders already know, an enormous library of third-party indicators and EAs, and a lightweight footprint that runs smoothly even on older hardware.

Exness pairs the MT4 platform with infrastructure that matters at execution time:

  • Instant and Market execution modes available depending on account type
  • Unlimited leverage available on some accounts for qualifying clients (risk warning applies — leverage magnifies losses as well as gains)
  • Stop Out protection and negative balance protection built into the broker layer, not just the platform
  • 24/7 trading on cryptocurrency pairs even when MT4 is used

Downloading Exness MT4

Desktop (Windows)

  1. Log in to your Exness Personal Area at my.exness.com.
  2. Navigate to My Accounts and select or create an MT4 account.
  3. Click Download Platform and choose MetaTrader 4 for Windows.
  4. Run the installer (ExnessSetup.exe) and follow the on-screen prompts. The default installation path is C:\Program Files\Exness MT4.
  5. MT4 launches automatically after installation.

Desktop (macOS)

Exness does not publish a native macOS build of MT4. Mac users have two supported options:

  • Wine wrapper: Download the Windows version and run it through a Wine layer. CrossOver (paid) or PlayOnMac (free) are common choices.
  • Exness MT5: The MT5 desktop client has a native Mac installer and supports all the same Exness instruments.
  • WebTerminal: Access MT4 directly in your browser — no installation needed — via the WebTerminal link in the Personal Area.

Mobile (iOS & Android)

  1. Search for "MetaTrader 4" in the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Install the official MetaQuotes app.
  3. Open the app, tap Settings > New Account > Login to Existing Account.
  4. Search for "Exness" in the broker search box and select your regional server (e.g., Exness-Real3).
  5. Enter your MT4 account number and password.

The mobile app mirrors your desktop session in real time. Positions opened on desktop appear immediately on mobile.

First Login and Server Selection

After launching MT4 on desktop:

  1. The login window appears automatically. If not, go to File > Login to Trade Account.
  2. Enter your MT4 account number (not your email).
  3. Enter your investor password (read-only) or master password (full trading access).
  4. In the Server dropdown, type "Exness" and select the correct server. Your server name is shown in the Personal Area next to your account number.

If you see "Invalid account" errors, double-check that you are on an MT4 account (not MT5) and that the server suffix matches the one shown in your Personal Area.

The MT4 workspace has four main areas:

AreaLocationPurpose
Market WatchLeft panelLive bid/ask prices for all instruments
NavigatorLeft panel (tabbed)Accounts, indicators, EAs, scripts
Chart WindowCentrePrice charts, drawing tools
TerminalBottom panelOpen trades, history, alerts, journal

Opening a Chart

  1. In Market Watch, right-click any symbol and choose Chart Window, or simply drag it onto the main area.
  2. Right-click the chart background > Properties to change colours to your preference.
  3. Use the toolbar period buttons (M1, M5, M15, M30, H1, H4, D1, W1, MN) to switch timeframes.

Chart Setup: Getting Your Workspace Ready

Adding Indicators

MT4 comes with 30+ built-in indicators. To add one:

  1. Click Insert > Indicators and browse by category (Trend, Oscillators, Volumes, etc.).
  2. Or expand Indicators in the Navigator panel, then drag the indicator onto the chart.
  3. Configure parameters in the pop-up settings window and click OK.

Recommended starter set for Exness traders:

  • Moving Averages (EMA 20, EMA 50) — trend direction on H1/H4
  • RSI (14) — momentum and overbought/oversold conditions
  • MACD (12, 26, 9) — trend momentum and crossover signals
  • Bollinger Bands (20, 2) — volatility and mean-reversion setups

Drawing Tools

The toolbar on the left side of each chart contains drawing tools: trend lines, horizontal lines, Fibonacci retracements, channels, and text labels. All drawings are saved per chart profile and persist between sessions.

Saving a Profile

Once your chart layout is set:

  1. Go to File > Profiles > Save As.
  2. Name the profile (e.g., "Scalping Setup").
  3. Load it any time via File > Profiles.

Setting Up Multiple Charts

Exness MT4 supports as many open chart windows as your PC can handle. Organise them with Window > Tile Horizontally or Window > Tile Vertically for side-by-side comparison. Many traders run a 4-chart or 6-chart grid covering major pairs across different timeframes.

Placing Trades on MT4

Market Order

  1. In Market Watch, double-click a symbol — or press F9 — to open the Order window.
  2. Confirm the Volume (lot size).
  3. Add Stop Loss and Take Profit levels if needed.
  4. Click Buy or Sell at the shown price.

Pending Orders

In the same Order window, change the Type dropdown from "Market Execution" to a pending order type:

  • Buy Limit — buy at a price below the current market
  • Sell Limit — sell at a price above the current market
  • Buy Stop — buy when price rises to a trigger level
  • Sell Stop — sell when price falls to a trigger level

Set your Price level, optional stop loss / take profit, and an optional Expiry time.

Modifying and Closing Trades

  • Modify: Right-click any open position in the Terminal > Modify or Delete Order.
  • Close: Right-click and choose Close Order, or click the "x" button in the Terminal panel.
  • Partial close: In the Close Order window, reduce the volume field to close only part of the position.

Expert Advisors (EAs) on Exness MT4

Expert Advisors are MT4's automated trading programs written in MQL4. Exness allows EA trading on all account types, including Standard, Pro, Raw Spread, and Zero.

Installing an EA

  1. Download the EA file (.ex4 or .mq4).
  2. In MT4, go to File > Open Data Folder.
  3. Navigate to MQL4 > Experts and paste the EA file there.
  4. In MT4, press F5 or go to Navigator > Expert Advisors and click Refresh.
  5. Drag the EA onto the chart where you want it to run.
  6. Configure EA settings in the pop-up window and click OK.

Enabling Auto Trading

The EA will not trade until you enable it:

  1. Click the AutoTrading button in the MT4 toolbar (it turns green when active).
  2. Check that the EA panel on the top-right of the chart shows a smiley face (not a sad face). A sad face means the EA is loaded but auto trading is off, or the EA's own internal toggle is disabled.

EA Best Practices on Exness

  • Use a VPS: Exness offers a free VPS for accounts with a minimum equity (check current eligibility in your Personal Area). A VPS keeps the EA running 24/7 without leaving your PC on.
  • Test first on a demo account: Exness demo accounts replicate live spreads and execution, making them reliable for EA testing.
  • Check execution mode: Some EAs are built for instant execution; Exness Raw Spread and Zero accounts use market execution. Verify your EA handles re-quotes or slippage gracefully.
  • Monitor swap-free compatibility: If your EA holds positions overnight, confirm whether the strategy is compatible with Exness's swap-free account terms.

Key MT4 Settings for Exness Users

One-Click Trading

Enable one-click trading for faster execution in fast-moving markets:

Tools > Options > Trade tab > tick One Click Trading.

A confirmation panel appears on each chart — clicking Buy or Sell executes immediately at the shown volume.

Alerts

Set price alerts via Insert > Alerts or by right-clicking on the chart at your target level. MT4 can play a sound, send an email, or run a script when the price hits the alert level.

Email Notifications

Configure MT4 to email you on trade events:

Tools > Options > Email tab — enter your SMTP server details. Many traders use Gmail's SMTP for this.
