Short answer: Exness is an online multi-asset broker that offers CFDs on forex, metals, energies, indices, stocks and crypto. It says it began in 2008, and its founder and CEO is Petr Valov. You open an account, deposit, and trade price movements on a platform such as MetaTrader 5, without owning the underlying asset. Exness earns from spreads, commissions and swaps. It runs through several group companies authorised by different regulators, so the company you actually sign with depends on where you register.
This is a beginner's explainer. For a full assessment of fees, complaints and withdrawals read our Exness review, and for how to check which entity serves you see the regulation guide. Facts come from Exness's own pages and Help Center, and from regulator pages, checked on October 27, 2026. We did not open or fund an account for this page.

How Exness works
- Register a Personal Area with your email and country. The region you register from decides your entity and the payment methods shown to you.
- Verify your identity and address. See Exness verification.
- Open a trading account (Standard, Standard Cent, Pro, Raw Spread or Zero). See account types.
- Deposit with a method shown in your region, from an account in your own name. See deposit and withdrawal.
- Trade CFDs in MetaTrader or the Exness platforms. A demo account is free.
- Withdraw from the Personal Area, usually back through a method you used.
A CFD (contract for difference) lets you gain or lose on a price change without owning the asset. Trades have no expiry date, though overnight swap or fees can apply. Leverage magnifies profit and loss.
How does Exness make money?
Exness says its revenue comes from spreads, commissions and swaps (where applicable) rather than from the outcome of individual trades. In practice:
| Source | What it is | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Spread | Difference between bid and ask | All accounts; on commission-free accounts it is the main cost |
| Commission | A charge per lot per side | Raw Spread and Zero accounts; none on Standard, Standard Cent, Pro |
| Swap and overnight fees | Charged on positions held overnight | Where applicable; swap-free by default on eligible instruments |
Exness also describes itself as a multi-asset market maker: your applicable entity, or another Exness entity, provides liquidity and execution internally and is the counterparty to your trades. It says it avoids labelling its service with market titles such as ECN or STP because the terms vary. That means the answer to "what type of broker is Exness" is: a market-maker, not a broker that passes each order to an exchange. Source: Execution, checked October 27, 2026. For costs in numbers see fees and spreads.
Exness also runs a partnership program, and websites such as OnForex earn referral commission when a reader opens an account through a link. That does not change what the reader pays.
Where is Exness located and which entity serves you?
Exness does not present one single headquarters in the Help Center. It says it operates through different entities authorised and regulated in various jurisdictions, and that your entity appears in the footer of your Personal Area.
Exness operates through several group companies authorised by different financial regulators around the world. The company that serves you is named in your client agreement and in the footer of your Personal Area. Check the current list on Exness's regulation page and confirm it on the regulator's own register. A group-wide list does not mean every authorisation covers you: the protections that apply depend on the entity in your client agreement. Office addresses for the Seychelles and Cyprus companies are in our review, and the regulation guide explains how to check a register. Kenya clients can read about Exness (KE) Limited.
Who can open an Exness account?
Anyone who is of legal age in their country and lives in a place Exness serves. Exness does not provide services to residents of several jurisdictions, including the USA. Eligibility, available products and payment methods are shown when you register, and some governments or regulators have published warnings or rules about foreign brokers. Check your local rules before you register.
